Our expert viola teachers are specialists in helping beginners through to advanced violists of all ages and musical backgrounds. Whether you want to improve your sight reading skills for orchestral playing, improve your playing technique on the viola, or just want to learn for enjoyment, our viola lessons can be tailored specifically to your needs. We can also help you prepare for viola examinations with AMEB, ABRSM, ANZCA, and Trinity.
Violin, Viola, Cello, Piano, Theory, VCE, and Composition Teacher
Anne Shirley-Peel, Sydney-born professional musician, string teacher, composer and conductor studied at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School, graduating with the A.MUS. A and the Higher School Certificate.
She continued on to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying violin with renowned teacher Robert Pikler and graduating with the Diploma (DSCM).
While studying at the Sydney Conservatory she won scholarships and prizes in violin and composition. Post-graduate studies followed on violin with renowned teacher Jan Sedivka in Hobart.
She is a graduate of the University of Melbourne (B.MUS.) majoring in composition and studied composition in the UK with Peter Maxwell Davies.
Anne played with the Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony and West Australian Symphony Orchestras and Opera Victoria and has given solo and chamber music concerts of her own music as well as classical and contemporary classical music. She toured with orchestras within Australia and to Europe and Asia.
Anne loves music and is passionate about sharing that love of music with her students. She brings to her teaching a wealth of experience, having taught in private and state schools in primary and secondary departments in Sydney, Melbourne, South Gippsland and Mornington, and at tertiary level at the Victorian College of the Arts, and in her own studio for forty plus years.
She was recently awarded a certificate in recognition of this from the VMTA.
She is patient, kind and provides a positive nurturing and stimulating environment in which many young people have grown their talent and achieved their highest musical potential including gaining entry into ANAM young academy.
Anne’s teaching is eclectic, drawing on the pedagogies of Suzuki, Kodaly, Colour strings and Rolland to suit the needs of individual students from beginners to advanced students, children to adults. She focuses on good tone production, intonation, body posture and placement on instrument, aural skills and ensemble skills, efficient technique, musical style, interpretive character, breadth of repertoire, reading and elements of musical theory.

Continuing her family tree of 4 generations of string players, Biana’s life was filled with music from young age.
Her education began in the stringent and demanding Soviet Union where she studied in the special music school for gifted children; it was the only one of its kind in her state. From then on she continued her studies of performing arts for further 5 years in the University for the Performing Arts under the guidance of the infamous Prof. Alexander Kaushanski, the student of the renowned violinist David Oistrakh. She completed her education with honours.
Her talent and abilities did not go unnoticed. She commenced her performance career in the country renowned for its musical abilities working with The State Opera and Ballet Theatre alongside teaching children of all age groups in the demanding education system of Russia. She continued her career as an educator in some of Melbourne’s most demanding schools and high schools such as Bialik College as well as at a TAFE level in her role at Box Hill TAFE.
Her genres were not only limited to classical music as she enjoyed teaching and performing in different genres. She participated in international Jazz festivals, klezmer, operettas (working with the best Hungarian troupes), opera and theatre. Her overseas appearances and tours included travels to some of the most prestigious European theatres in Germany, France, Romania, Spain and Hungary. In Australia, she toured with Maestro Andrea Bocelli on his tour with Delta Goodrem. She also played the Opera in the Market and Opera in the Alps, the Aria award ceremony and guest performances with Melbourne and City Opera, The Melbourne Musicians and Australia Philharmonic Orchestra.
We are very fortunate that Biana is bringing and sharing this experience with our Whitehorse Music community. Able to teach all age groups, tailoring her teaching to their individual style and passion as well as ensuring they meet their own goals, she is a great asset. Whether your goal is performing along the best, the AMEB/ARSM/Trinity exams, preparation for a scholarship or simply for enjoyment having your child play a father’s day song, Biana has the experience, teaching style and the knowledge to help you or your child.

Violin and Viola Teacher
Iseult is a violinist with an exceptional background in performance. She held an associate principal position with Orchestra Victoria for many years and has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. Her teaching career spans over two decades, including posts with Mentone Grammar, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Kilbreda College and Ruyton Girls School. She teaches both violin and viola, catering to students of all ages and abilities.
Iseult teaches on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Violin and Viola Teacher
Sarah loves the diverse community that the Whitehorse Music School community creates. Her teaching is strengthened, inspired and supported by her frequent performance work with Orchestra Victoria, the Production Company Orchestra and numerous other Melbourne ensembles. She also currently teaches at Trinity Grammar School, and has taught at Ruyton Girls' and Camberwell South Primary Schools.
Sarah completed studies at the Boston Conservatory with Dr Katie Lansdale in June 2017. She holds a Master of Music (Performance Teaching) from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Music Performance (with Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education from the Australian Catholic University. Her teachers during her study in Melbourne included Matthew Tomkins (Principal 2nd Violin with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), Adam Chalabi (Tin Alley String Quartet) and Miwako Abe.
